Forty-five years ago on April 22, we celebrated the first Earth Day, and this month we continue to celebrate working together to help heal and conserve our life-giving planet. Let’s reduce, reuse and recycle together for the benefit of generations to come. April 26, 2014, Saturday, Claremont, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.: “Helping 2 Protect the Environment” is the theme for this year’s Earth Day Celebration that takes place along 2nd Street in the Claremont Village. There will be demonstrations, gardening workshops, exhibitor and vendor booths, a kids’ zone, live music, green products, guest speakers, and a drop-off for used shoe donations.
April 26, 2014, Saturday, Dana Point, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.: The Ocean Institute at 24200 Dana Point Harbor Drive will host special programs and activities. Create eco-friendly crafts, explore marine life, and engage in many other hands-on activities. An admission fee will be charged, but if you volunteer for a beach/harbor cleanup earlier in the day, from 9-11 a.m., get admitted free.
April 26, 2014, Saturday, Glendale, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.: The Pacific Community Center, 501 S. Pacific Avenue will be the site of educational exhibits and family fun events. Come and learn to reduce your carbon footprint, compost and reduce water usage. Enjoy live music. Try your luck and enter a drawing for environmental prizes. You may be the winner of a bicycle! Also, those arriving early will receive a $5 food truck credit while supplies last.
April 26, Saturday, 2014, Glendora, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.: Come to the Glendora City Hall for this year’s Earth Day celebration. Before the celebration, beginning at 8:30 a.m., help kick off the festivities with a community bike ride and children’s bike safety rodeo. The day’s events are jam-packed with gardening, composting, and water-efficient irrigation workshops; an exotic animal show; children’s activities; eco tours; live entertainment; face painting; drought-tolerant plant exhibits; children’s treasure hunt; free document shredding; bike valet parking; and more!
April 26-27, 2014, Saturday-Sunday, Lancaster, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.: The Antelope Valley will celebrates Earth Day with its annual California Poppy Festival at Lancaster City Park. Enjoy plenty of entertainment, exiting exhibits and plenty to keep you engaged and busy. Admission is $8 for adults; $5 for seniors, military, and children; children under 5 are free.
April 26-27, 2014, Saturday-Sunday, Long Beach, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.: For the 15th year, Aquarium of the Pacific is planning a special Earth Day program with a number of family-friendly activities celebrating the environment and sustainable living. Hands-on learning demonstrations will delight people of all ages. There will be an admission fee, and this event is free to Aquarium members
April 28, 2014, Monday, Long Beach, 10 a.m. to dusk: A 20-year running joint celebration of Children’s Day and Earth Day is planned at Recreation Park. Take part in arts, crafts and games. Enjoy the two entertainment stages and good eating at the food booths. The children’s parade begins at 1 p.m.
April 26-27, 2014, Saturday-Sunday, Los Angeles, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.: The Los Angeles Zoo will mark Earth Day by “Celebrating California Wildlife.” Exhibits throughout the zoo will feature education, conservation, and recycling in an interactive, Earth-friendly environment. Regular zoo admission rates apply.
April 26, 2014, Saturday, Manhattan Beach, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.: Come to Polliwog Park and enjoy the two E’s of entertainment and education. Enjoy live entertainment, speakers, presentations, a composting class, children’s activities, an eco-shopping area, free bike valet parking, food and beverage vendors, an alternative fuel vehicle display, e-waste and printer toner cartridge recycling, and more.
April 26, 2014, Saturday, Mission Viejo, 8 a.m. to 12 p.m.: A joint Arbor Day and Earth Day will take place at Coronado Park. The event starts with a community planting party and cleanup to plant new landscaping along Avery Parkway, east of Marguerite Parkway. Also, a “green expo” at Coronado Park will feature a home composting workshop, Earth-friendly crafts, and more. While they last, free hot dogs and ice cream will be given out.
April 26, 2014, Saturday, Newport Beach, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.: The Newport Bay Conservancy is celebrating Earth Day at the Peter and Mary Muth Interpretive Center, 2301 University Drive. The event is free and will feature environmental exhibits, science discovery and craft booths, scavenger hunts, live entertainment, and more. Rounding out the festivities, local food trucks will be available, too.
April 24-25, 2014, Thursday-Friday, Redondo Beach. On Thursday, 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Redondo Beach Farmers Market in front of Veterans park, 309 Esplanade, April 24, Earth Day booths will be open. Free validations will provide an hour’s free parking in the Pier Parking Structure. On Friday, April 25, from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m., the Earth Day booth will be at the Riviera Village Farmers’ Market on the corner of Avenue I and Catalina Avenue. Pick up a free reusable tote bag, and buy fresh produce from the local farmers, growers, and beekeepers, and take in the works of gifted artisans.
April 26, 2014, Saturday, San Clemente, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.: Learn about protecting our Planet Earth at the San Clemente Pier and Parque Del Mar. There will be educational demonstrations, displays, live entertainment, vendor booths, a children’s crafts area, and giveaways. April 26, 2014, Saturday, Santa Monica, 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.: Heal the Bay and the Santa Monica Pier Aquarium are jointly hosting Earth Day activities. Help with the beach cleanup from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. and take in the sandcastle contest from 9 a.m.-12:30. Beach cleanup volunteers will be given free same-day admission to the Santa Monica Pier Aquarium, open from 11 a.m.-5 p.m. Special Earth Day events at the Santa Monica Pier Acquarium include scavenger hunts, face painting, crafts stations, a film screening, and a special 2 p.m. presentation by underwater photographer and author, Richard Salas.
April 26, 2014, Saturday, South Gate, 8 a.m. to 12 p.m.: Come to the Goals Soccer Center in South Gate Park for a community cleanup. The City of South Gate is also sponsoring a hazardous waste and e-waste collection at South Gate Park.
May 3, 2014, Saturday, Pasadena, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.: A celebration of the environment and the arts is planned to take place at Memorial Park and Armory Center for the Arts, 145 N. Raymond Ave.
May 18, 2014, Sunday, Los Angeles, 10:30 a.m. to 7 p.m.: Los Angeles’ largest Earth Day celebration, World Fest, will be held at Woodley Park in Encino. The solar-powered celebration will feature more than 100 environmental exhibits and vendor booths; educational workshops; children’s activities, including storytelling and face painting; live entertainment; an expansive food court; and more. Special programs and lectures will be held in the “eco-tent” and “healthy hut.” There will be an admission fee and if purchased by April 30, they can be purchased at discounted prices.
